The Chamber of Commerce of the Chattanooga area worked with La Paz Chattanooga and other partners in late 2018 to ask the question: What will the experience of living, working and learning in Chattanooga and Hamilton County be like in the next 20 years?
We interviewed Christy Gillenwater, Director and CEO of the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce for more information.
Q. The survey was offered in Spanish and English. Can you explain why this was so important?
A. It was incredibly important for us to involve as many members of our Latino communities as possible. We care about your voice and what you think. Together, we will plan the growth of our community and invite all of our neighbors, businesses and leaders to create and be a part of the result.
Q. More than 4,800 people responded. How is this represented on the Hamilton County map?
A. The principles of inclusion and diversity are critically important for the future of Chattanooga. With the help of La Paz Chattanooga, Urban League and United Way, we reached every neighborhood in Hamilton County.
Q. What's next?
A. We have inherited an incredible legacy from those who dreamed of a larger ideal for Hamilton County and Chattanooga. Now it is our turn to do the same for our next two generations. Velocity2040's vision informs the work of a strategic economic development planning process, by the Chamber of Commerce of the Chattanooga Area, whose team members will guide the process of creating a 5-year implementation plan with economic development strategies and of professional talent.
We have asked La Paz Chattanooga and Urban League to facilitate the next steps for the leadership strategy. Other key partners are facilitating work for the four remaining elements in the plan and we look forward to working with everyone in the coming years.
Now, we want to make sure that everyone is part of this planning, especially the members of our diverse Latino communities.

The Velocity 2040 survey points to five major community goals for the 2040 Hamilton County:
1.) We are the most intelligent city in the south, focused on educational excellence for all students.
2.) Each resident thrives economically.
3.) 20 minutes or less is our transit standard.
4.) Diverse leaders represent the full spectrum of who we are.
5.) A collaborative process to resolve challenges frankly and respectfully has transformed neighborhoods and united our governments.
